david

David Thurn Valsassina – President

David is the President and founder of Black Canyon Construction. Born in Perth, Western Australia, David grew up in a family with strong work ethics and a love for the great outdoors.

After moving to the States, David began his construction career in single-family home construction as a supervisor in Houston Texas. In his first 15 years started, built, and completed exemplary new subdivisions all over Houston, Sugarland, Stafford, New Territory, Katy, and Pearland.

During the late 90’s David moved his family to the Hill County near San Antonio, TX where as a superintendent of a commercial builder, he built new convenience stores for Exxon, Shell and Valero.

In 2001, David and his wife opened Black Canyon Construction for business in San Antonio Texas. The Company has expanded its services to Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado. Built on the idea that honesty, hard work, and integrity should be the foundation of all its relationships, Black Canyon has become a preferred Builder for Architects, Retail Clients and Homeowners.

Working closely with each client, having a dedicated quality team, and hiring the best sub-contractors available has elevated Black Canyon above the competition.


carolCarol Thurn Valsassina – Vice President

Carol has been with Black Canyon Construction since its’ inception. Her primary focus has been to establish the internal controls and system of financial reporting for the company and set procedures for evaluating project results as to cost, quality, and client relationship by keeping informed of all such activities and performance. She supervises the office staff, interfaces with subcontractors and clients, manages conflicts and problem-solve issues to resolution .

She graduated from TWU with a BS in Business Management and spent the previous 22 years selling High Speed Communications Equipment in Texas and Louisiana.


Chase Zachary – Project Manager/Estimating

Chase Zachary became part of Black Canyon’s team in December 2008. Prior to that he was working in the NASCAR Industry traveling the race circuits with Toyota’s Truck team as an engine specialist. He began his career at Toyota’s NASCAR Center in North Carolina as one of their youngest cylinder head machinist after training at Richard Childress and Rousch Yates Racing . He transitioned into our company as a Superintendent working on our projects for Valero’s Corner Store Remodels, Stripes Convenience Stores New Builds, residential new homes and residential remodeling.

In March 2010, Chase took over the Project Estimating for Black Canyon and began streamlining the evaluation processes. Working closely with our subcontractors to offer value added services to our client has quickly become his strong point at our company. Chase also evaluates and administers the subcontractors change orders and engineering requirements throughout the projects. He coordinates between our clients, the engineers, our project managers and the subcontractors to ensure the cohesive and productive progress on each project.


julieJulia Doris – Office Manager

Julia Doris joined Black Canyon Construction as the Office Manager in January 2008. She quickly evolved into the “go to” person in our company while coordinating between the Project Managers and our subcontractors. She works closely with all concerned to maintain the organization of each project and the massive amount of paperwork involved including but not limited to invoices, change orders, insurance requirements contract administration and billing. We were lucky to find such a competent, pleasant and reliable person who can consistently achieve results and work independently. Her loyalty is beyond reproach and she has become a valuable team member at Black Canyon.


scottScott Mabry – Lead Construction Manager

Scott Mabry has been working in the Construction Industry for 35 years. His background is in both commercial and residential construction. These years of experience combined with his diligent work ethics quickly became a valuable asset to Black Canyon and our clients. Prior to joining our company, Scott was Vice President of Construction at Chester’s Hamburger administering the maintenance, remodeling and building of their stores. Starting with our team in May 2011 as Project Superintendent, Scott quickly proved his skills in leadership, project coordination, subcontractor negotiation and quality assurance. Consistently he has efficiently managed to prioritize our client requests, maintain a safe work environment, quickly resolve discrepancies and turn over a quality product ahead of schedule.

In September 2012 Scott became the Lead Construction Manager for Black Canyon evaluating projects for quality assurance, progress and customer compliance.


Reed Shaffer

Reed grew up in the Construction Industry with his family building Residential Subdivisions and Subcontracting Concrete Services in the San Antonio Area. His field experience goes back over 15 years of operating heavy equipment, steel erection, concrete forming, sheet rocking, interior finish out, tiling, demolition. Reed has been a superintendent on multiple projects coordinating the subcontractors, construction schedules, inspections, safety programs and building permits including ground up C-Stores, Commercial Remodels , restaurants and tenant finish outs. His experience also includes estimating projects, assembling bid packages and working the City Building departments from the design to the punch list to secure a smooth path of progress for the projects.
